InclusionEnglish as an Additional Language (EAL)All children need to feel, accepted and valued in order to learn. As a school, we realise that bilingualism is a strength and that EAL children have a valuable contribution to make. At Green Lane our pupils come from a variety of backgrounds. There are twenty one different languages spoken, and 23% of the pupils are learning English as an additional language. A member of the Senior Management Team has responsibility for the We also have special days when we celebrate different languages and cultures such as ‘World Week’ and ‘International Language Day’. We also teach tolerance of all religious beliefs in our RE lessons throughout the school. Special Educational Needs (SEN)At Green Lane we have a diverse cohort of pupils, with 53 children (14.5%) on the Special Educational Needs Register. These pupils have been identified as having barriers to their learning. The barriers may be identified as cognitive (to do with their ability to learn); behavioural (where their behaviour prevents them from accessing the curriculum); physical (they may have a physical disability that prevents them from learning); or emotional (when their emotional state may prevent them from learning). It is the responsibility of the School to identify the pupils’ needs and put strategies and interventions in place in order to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential. My role is to support staff in identifying pupils with barriers to their learning, assess their needs and ensure programmes are implemented to enable progress to be made. This may involve deploying support staff efficiently, identifying appropriate programmes, liaising with outside agencies and ensuring parents are kept informed. Interventions currently available in School include Speech and Language programmes, motor skills, phonics groups, catch up literacy and numeracy , programmes, social skills groups etc. Many programmes are initiated by outside agencies, who then train our staff to continue the work and monitor pupils’ progress. One of my main aims this year is to set up a system to monitor interventions we have in place and their impact on learners, and also to ensure pupils with special needs are tracked throughout their time at Green Lane. Various enrichment opportunities are currently in place for more able, gifted and talented pupils, in the form of writing groups, challenges for mathematically able children, as well as activities for children who excel in subjects such as Art and PE. When children are identified as being gifted and talented, teaching staff ensure that their needs are catered for by planning tasks that are stimulating, challenging, open ended, therefore encouraging the pupils to develop their thinking skills. |
