School Meals, Packed Lunches and SnacksSchool meals are provided at school by Cygnet Catering. Children may bring their own packed lunches and a cold drink in suitable spill proof containers. No hot drinks, fizzy drinks or sweets please. We are a Healthy School and parents are encouraged to promote healthy eating by ensuring that the packed lunch does not include foodstuff containing colourants or preservatives (E numbers!) that have a known affect upon children’s behaviour. Also, some children are allergic to nuts and nut products. Although we discourage the sharing of lunch, we cannot prevent it. Certain additives seriously affect many children and some have marked behavioural changes after lunch (or is it just that we are tired too?). Foods high in sugars cause a blood sugar surge and can lead to inappropriate behaviour in some children and lethargy in the afternoon when the blood sugars reduce. Neither is conducive to effective pupil learning! Mid-morning snacks for the break time should only consist of either fruit or vegetables. Lunchtime supervisory assistants look after the children, both in the dining room and in the playground. Families seeking information about eligibility for free school meals should enquire at the school office. We would encourage all parents eligible for a free packed lunch to take up the offer – EVEN IF THEY SUPPLY A PACKED LUNCH FOR THEIR CHILD. All pupils receive a school meal menu which needs to be returned to school each Wednesday for the following week's meals with the payment which is currently £1.75 per meal. Children are able to choose from a main hot meal, a vegetarian hot meal, jacket potato with filling, a salad or a packed lunch (which can be ordered as a meat or vegetarian packed lunch). |
